Sports Fans Lose Out on Social Media Ban (For Now)

Professional and collegiate sports organizations are missing out on a huge social media opportunity.

Two weeks ago, Reuters ran an article about how North American pro sports leagues are in a twitter over tweeting.  The article discusses how the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) recently imposed policies and guidelines for its players, coaches and operations personnel regarding the use of social media applications, such as Twitter and Facebook.  The rules specifically for the NFL also apply to those representing a player or coach, such as an agent who might tweet on their client’s behalf.

Reactive Marketing v. Proactive Marketing

A reactive approach is what most organizations are using today to spearhead their marketing activities. To their defense—reactive behavior is second nature to us as human beings. You see someone driving down the road and you find yourself thinking—I could really use a new a car. Organizations function the same way—word gets out that a customer just landed a new partner or is attending a new event and immediately the executives and marketing team thinks—we need to do that. Right? Wrong.

What is Your Social Media Plan?

Many of our clients are new to the social media scene and are having a difficult time grasping its potential.  Some (business-to-business clients) believe it is better suited for consumer audiences, while others think it is unproven and not worth the time or budget.  While we continue to chisel away at common misconceptions related to social media, our view is that there is a strategic place for this new medium in every business, market, industry, sector – you name it.

Connecting With Your Audience

Have you seen the latest HSBC television commercial? The one that captures “green” protesters causing a ruckus on a logging job site?

As MSNBC’s Allison Linn points out in her article I'm a Lumberjack, and I'm OK ..., the global financial services company put together a very interesting, yet esoteric commercial. And the underlying message is somewhat puzzling.

Viral Advertising

The NY Video 2.0 - September Meetup, co-hosted by NewTeeVee last night, focused on viral ads and the impact they have on branding and market awareness. Ten viral ads were screened and critiqued by a panel of advertising experts and moderated by NewTeeVee’s Liz Gannes.

Simply stated, a viral ad is commercially produced and made for online viewing. However, some of the ads showcased last night were originally made for television and ultimately became viral such as Tide to Go’s “The Talking Stain.”
