Thoughts for 2010

The month of December can be a “wrap-up” for many—however in the marketing and PR industry it’s more of a “ramp-up” month with client and campaign planning for the next year. After meeting with a number of clients and discussing goals and strategies for 2010—I began organizing my thoughts into a list of what I think we can expect to see from marketing, PR, social media, and technology in 2010:

Out of Touch

In the last week, I had a few experiences that left me thinking, “Wow, some people are seriously out of touch.”

It’s no surprise, that the marketing and PR landscape is evolving, especially with the emergence of social media, blogs, online video, etc. (we have blogged about before: here and here).  However it is shocking that there are people—PR and marketing professionals alike—who still do not see the value in embracing social media.

Sports Fans Lose Out on Social Media Ban (For Now)

Professional and collegiate sports organizations are missing out on a huge social media opportunity.

Two weeks ago, Reuters ran an article about how North American pro sports leagues are in a twitter over tweeting.  The article discusses how the National Football League (NFL), National Basketball Association (NBA) and National Hockey League (NHL) recently imposed policies and guidelines for its players, coaches and operations personnel regarding the use of social media applications, such as Twitter and Facebook.  The rules specifically for the NFL also apply to those representing a player or coach, such as an agent who might tweet on their client’s behalf.

Drinking the Social Media Kool-Aid

A few months ago we helped a client launch their first social media campaign and got them initially started utilizing LinkedIn and Twitter. It has been a little over two months and we have connected with nearly 300 “friends,” and this number is growing every day. In our view, quality is more important than quantity, and so far the client has received a few serious sales leads. But more importantly, they are connecting with people on a different level utilizing these social platforms, and learning a lot about the market and its needs.

What is Your Social Media Plan?

Many of our clients are new to the social media scene and are having a difficult time grasping its potential.  Some (business-to-business clients) believe it is better suited for consumer audiences, while others think it is unproven and not worth the time or budget.  While we continue to chisel away at common misconceptions related to social media, our view is that there is a strategic place for this new medium in every business, market, industry, sector – you name it.

Live Tweeting? Do Unto Others…

Heckler

If you’re on Twitter, odds are that you have experienced someone “live tweeting” from a conference or event.  This real-time “play-by-play” can be very useful, especially when you don’t have the time or budget to physically attend keynotes, meetups and panel discussions that are local or somewhere around the world.

But what happens when the person doing the live tweeting goes toxic?  I have witnessed a few instances when live tweeters have become   virtual hecklers, and while their opinion might be valid, it all comes down to the delivery.

Join the Social Media Conversation

Today, I gave a client a “Twitter 101” primer.

Unbeknownst to him, someone from his company (a non-marketing employee) created a profile on Twitter and started tweeting on behalf of the organization without the marketing department’s knowledge. While we presented the need for a social media strategy several months ago, at the time, Twitter (and other social media platforms) was not a priority because they had several other marketing initiatives in play.  This changed today.
