Springboard has teamed up with DKMS, the world's largest bone marrow donor center, to help a family seek a donor for their son Brian Wecker Jr. who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL).
Brian, 15, was diagnosed in August 2009, and his only chance of survival is a life-saving bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor. DKMS is asking for individuals to come out and register for the drive to see if they are a match for Brian.
DKMS is facilitating a bone marrow donor drive this Saturday (January 9, 2010). The drive, which will run from 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm, will be hosted by Maloney’s Pub and Grill (119 Main Street) in Matawan, NJ.
Although this donor drive is based in New Jersey, those who register will also be listed on the national “Be The Match Registry.” So, even if you are not a match for Brian, you could potentially help someone else in need of a bone marrow transplant.
This is the second time we worked with DKMS to help local families find a prospective donor. Getting the word out for these drives is critical, and several media outlets such as the Asbury Park Press, The Star-Ledger, The Independent and others are helping out. Twitter is also playing a key role and we hope people can share and retweet the details to reach an even larger audience.
In order to register for Saturday’s bone marrow donor drive, you must be between the ages of 18 and 55, and in good general health. For more information, please visit http://www.dkmsamericas.org/ or call (212) 209–6703.
